Calls for caution on SA's roads

Monday, August 31, 2015

Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma on Sunday called for extraordinary caution and strict adherence to the rules of the road.

This follows a tragic weekend on South Africa’s roads since Friday.

Thirty-five people were killed when a bus overturned on the R408 between Butterworth and Willowvale‚ while ten people perished when a minibus taxi overturned on the R61 between Cradock and Graaff Reinet.

The Western Cape also saw 10 people die on the province’s roads at the weekend.

“We call on all road users to take extraordinary caution on our roads and to obey the rules of the road at all times.

“This senseless loss of life is unacceptable and it is happening more frequently on our roads,” President Zuma said.

He said law enforcement authorities can play their part but it is mainly up to the drivers to ensure that they adhere to the rules of the road in order to save the precious lives of people.

President Zuma also extended his condolences to the families who lost their lives, saying the country mourns their deaths.

“The pain faced by all the families is immeasurable. We also wish the injured a speedy recovery.”

The exact causes of the various tragedies are still under investigation. - SAnews.gov.za
