Pretoria - A total of 21 drunk drivers have been arrested following a massive traffic law enforcement operation at the weekend in the Northern Cape.
Communication Officer at the provincial Department of Transport, Safety and Liaison, Keitumetse Moticoe, said about 2 986 vehicles have been stopped and checked with 162 summonses been issued for general defects on a vehicle and other infringements.
Head of Department, Steven Jonkers, said the weekend operations were a huge success.
“21 drunk drivers have been arrested with two other arrests for false documentation. Two vehicles have been impounded and four vehicles discontinued for not being roadworthy.
“Our biggest concern is drunk driving. We are not satisfied with the level of drunken driving we are seeing on our roads.
“We will not compromise but will apply the law to its full force. We are coming for those drunk drivers and we are not going to have mercy on them,” he said.
Jonkers said they are committed to keep the people in the province safe. “We have reinforced our operations with the National Traffic Police and that’s how serious we are about our operations,” he said.
The weekend operation was joined by the National Traffic Police, South African Police Service and Road Traffic Management Corporation. - SAnews.gov.za
