Pretoria - Five Correctional Services officials are appearing in the Worcester Magistrate’s Court, this morning, following allegations of fraud and corruption.
Four of the officials were arrested by police on Thursday while on duty and the other suspect was arrested at home. Their names will be revealed after their appearance.
The five officials face a series of charges in terms of various sections of legislation governing the prevention and combating of corruption, as well as drugs.
The South Africa Police Service (SAPS) made the arrest following an 18-month joint operation with State Security and Correctional Services.
The Acting National Commissioner of Correctional Services, Zach Modise, has welcomed the arrest of five correctional officials.
“The arrest of these officials for alleged incidents of fraud and corruption should be sending an emphatic ‘zero tolerance message’ against fraud and corruption,” Modise said.
He said the zero tolerance message was in line with the pledge made by his Minister, Michael Masutha, when he addressed a meeting of the Portfolio Committee in Cape Town last week. – SAnews.gov.za
