Pretoria- President Jacob Zuma has conveyed a message of condolences to the government and people of the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal, following a massive earthquake there on Saturday.
It's reported that the earthquake has claimed over 1000 lives.
"Our thoughts are with the people of Nepal and neighbouring countries in the aftermath of the earthquake that has struck the Kathmandu Valley.
“On behalf of the Government and people of South Africa, I send my deepest condolences to the government of Nepal and to everyone affected, particularly to the families and friends of those killed and injured," said President Zuma.
The Department of International Relations and Cooperation on Sunday said the South African High Commission in Colombo, Sri Lanka, is in contact with authorities in Nepal and is on standby to assist South African nationals.
Meanwhile, President Zuma will on Sunday hand over prizes to winners of the JG Zuma Marathon in New Hanover near Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal.
The inaugural 42.5km annual marathon commenced at Seven Oaks in Greytown on Sunday morning and will finish at Albert Falls in New Hanover in the Mshwathi Municipality.-SAnews.gov.za
