Water tanks bring relief to drought-stricken municipalities

Pretoria – As the Department of Water and Sanitation continues with its Drought Relief Programme, 80 000 litres of water tanks have been delivered to Umjindi and Thembisile Hani Local Municipalities in Mpumalanga.

These are some of the municipalities most affected by the current drought in the province.

The water tanks have been delivered to Barberton and Kwaggafontein to bring relief to drought-stricken communities.

The department noted that the water sources in both municipalities are running low and with the current drought, there is little possibility of rain.

“The water tanks will assist the local communities with water supply in times of water shortages. The department intervened by bringing the water tanks to mitigate the negative impact of the drought on communities,” the department said.

The department urged community members to take care of the tanks to ensure that they have access to water.

“South Africa is a water scarce country and the current drought is making the water challenge severe, which calls for all of us to change our water use behaviour and embrace water conservation in everything we do,” said the department. – SAnews.gov.za
