Mandela celebrated his 94th birthday on Wednesday.
"Cabinet wishes Madiba a happy birthday and calls on all South Africans to spend at least 67 minutes doing good work in their communities," Cabinet spokesperson Jimmy Manyi said during a post Cabinet media briefing on Thursday.
The 67 minutes campaign is symbolic of the 67 years Mandela spent in service to humanity. Mandela's birthday, 18 July, is also recognised as Nelson Mandela International Day.
Thousands of South Africans, ministers and deputy ministers among them, heeded the call and spent some time doing good deeds on Wednesday.
At the national Mandela Day event in Zeerust, Minister of Arts and Culture Paul Mashatile set aside time to do community service.
Staff at the North West Premier's office also handed out gifts to three schools.
