Pretoria - The Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) has spoken out against the number of violent crime cases, especially at the onset of the 16 Days of Activism campaign.

The Commission noted with concern the high publicity that has been generated by the alleged Jules High School rape case, Greenstone rape case and the Anni Dewani killing.

"It demonstrates to us that there is still a rampant increase in violence against women and children. The purpose of this campaign is to generate an increased level of awareness pertaining to the high incidence of violence perpetuated against women and children and challenge perpetrators of these offences to change their behavior," said the Commission.

The CGE called on all of South Africa to play an active role in the creation of a sending of a society free from gender oppression and inequality.

The 16 Days campaign runs from 25 November - 10 December.

The CGE aims to promote respect for gender equality and the protection, development and attainment of gender equality.
