Thohoyandou - The deadline is looming for poor learners in Limpopo's Vhembe District who want to apply for bursaries to further their studies at university or Further Education and Training (FET) colleges.
The Vhembe District Municipality said applications for its bursaries will close this Saturday and learners should urgently get application forms from the executive mayor's office at the government complex in Thohoyandou.
"We want to invest in the future of promising learners whose families are too poor to pay for their education," said Mayor Falaza Mdaka.
"We have set aside R2 million to assist destitute students to pay for their tuition, text books and accommodation."
Bursaries are available for students who want to study civil, electrical, mining or chemical engineering, auditing, financial accounting, economics or business management in the fields of tourism, agriculture and mining.
"This is in response to the needs of the community we serve," said Mdaka.
Eligible learners must be resident within the Vhembe District Municipality and their parents must be unemployed.
Preference will be given to learners who have passed maths, science, as well as commercial subjects or technical subjects.
Mdaka warned that children of councillors and municipal officials were not eligible to apply.
