Pretoria - International Relations and Co-operation Minister Maite Nkoana- Mashabane has expressed condolences on the death of High Commissioner to Namibia, Curtis Nkondo.
Nkondo, an anti-apartheid struggle stalwart, died on Thursday morning at the Bedford Life Gardens Clinic in Johannesburg after a long illness. He was 82.
"On behalf of Government and the diplomatic community I wish to express our heartfelt condolences to the family of Nkondo during these trying moments. Our thoughts and prayers go out to them," said Nkoana- Mashabane.
Nkondo's political career spans decades before and after the first democratic elections in 1994. In 1985, he was elected chairperson of the Release Mandela Campaign and also became President of the National Education Union of South Africa. In 1983, Nkondo was elected as Vice-President of the Cape Town branch of the United Democratic Front (UDF).
After the 1994 elections Nkondo became a member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislator and served on various trusts such as the Association Against Woman and Child abuse and the Etwatwa Community Trust.
At the time of his death he was the head of the South African Diplomatic Mission in Namibia.
