Pretoria - Bafana Bafana caretaker coach Steve Komphela will take charge of Bafana's second 2014 World Cup qualifier match against Botswana in Gaborone on Saturday.
This comes after the South African Football Association (Safa) National Executive Committee (NEC) took a decision to sack Bafana head coach Pitso Mosimane, following a string of poor results by the national team.
According to reports, Safa's decision may have been fueled by the embarrassing 1-1 draw against lowly ranked Ethiopia in the opening 2014 World Cup qualifier match at Royal Bafokeng stadium on Sunday.
Safa Chief Executive Officer, Robin Petersen travelled to Royal Marang Sports Complex in Rustenburg - where the team is camping - last night to convey the message to Mosimane, his technical team and the players.
As a result, the association has appointed Steve Komphela as the caretaker coach with immediate effect.
After playing Botswana on Saturday, Bafana will play an international friendly against Gabon in Johannesburg on 15 June.
Safa's Emergency Committee considered the reports that were tabled at the meeting and mandated Safa Vice President Chief Mwelo Nonkonyana and Petersen to hold an urgent meeting with Pitso Mosimane to discuss the matter.
According to Petersen, both Safa and Mosimane agreed to part ways amicably in the best interests of both the country and the national team.
Following the meeting, a report was considered by the Emergency Committee on Monday evening after consultation with the National Executive Committee (NEC) and the decision was endorsed unanimously.
Safa President Kirsten Nematandani said: "The association will be indebted to Mosimane for the work he has done for Safa since his appointment as head coach of Bafana Bafana and we wish him well in his future endeavors.
"This association wants to place on record that Mosimane is the only coach that has assisted Safa by donating a portion of his salary in the pursuit of the development agenda of the association which included assisting the ex-professional football players to attend the coaching course that is currently on-going at Safa House."
Safa said is was pleased that both the technical team and the players had all endorsed the decision of the association and assured their country that they would do their best to represent their country in the best way possible, starting with the qualifier against Botswana and all subsequent matches.
"We appeal to the nation to also support the caretaker coach, the technical team, the players and the whole team going forward.
"We have entered into a crucial period of World Cup qualification and we will need all hands on deck to ensure this country gets to Brazil in 2014, as well as perform admirably at the 2013 Afcon tournament that we will host," said Petersen.
Komphela is expected to address the media at the squad's training camp at the Royal Marang Sports Complex after the first training session at 11:30.
