Pretoria - Gauteng MEC for Local Government and Housing, Kgaogelo Lekgoro, has sent a stern warning to people who continue to engage in violent attacks against councillors.
This follows an attack on Advocate Nyembe, who is a ward 5 councillor in Poortjie, south of Joburg.Nyembe and his family of five were attacked in their home in the early hours of Wednesday morning by a group of people for what seemed to be a service delivery protest.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital after sustaining injuries during the attack.
It is alleged that some members of the community, who were trying to help during the incident, were also attacked.
Lekgoro condemned the violent attacks and called on police to take a firm stand against the perpetrators.
"This act of terrorizing the community leaders should be condemned; this is not the way that people should raise their concerns.
"We cannot allow our people to be attacked by criminals in the name of service delivery protest," said Lekgoro.
Lekgoro appealed to community members to distance themselves from embarking in attacks on councillors.
"Councillors are there in communities to address people's issues and not to be subjected to the attacks that we are witnessing," said a concerned Lekgoro.
A case has been opened and police are busy investigating.
