Pretoria - Four people died when the bus they were travelling in overturned on the notorious Moloto Road (R573) between Pretoria and KwaMhlanga on Wednesday morning.
This is the second fatal accident on the road in just over a week. In the first incident 10 people were burnt to death when a bus collided with a truck and burst into flames.
Console Tleane of the Tshwane Community Safety Department said the accident on Wednesday occurred when a bus overturned next to the Kameeldrift Police Station. No other vehicles were involved.
Five passengers sustained critical injuries, 16 were seriously injured, while 37 passengers escaped with minor injuries.
The Tshwane Metro Police, Tshwane Fire Brigade, Tshwane Ambulances and the South African Police Services were on the scene to attend to the injured and take them to nearby hospitals, and to gather evidence needed for the investigation.
Traffic was diverted into a parallel gravel road in both directions.
The road was completely closed to traffic to allow investigators to collect evidence.
