New number plates for GP

Pretoria - Gauteng will finally unveil its new securitised aluminum number plate series next Tuesday.

The new number plates will have a two-dimensional barcode and an electronic disk, which will help the provincial government to root out unscrupulous people making fake number plates.

Newly appointed Roads and Transport MEC, Ismail Vadi, said that the new number plates would not come at a high cost. However, he said further details about the new plates would be released next week at the launch.

"We hope that this will help us in removing all [fraudulent] vehicles on our public roads," said Vadi during a media briefing on Monday.

Motorists in the province will be required to replace their current number plates with the new ones. They will, however, be allowed to keep their current registration numbers.

The Roads and Transport Department said it would undertake a renewal exercise to ensure that number plates are manufactured within the new specifications.

In terms of regulations, all number plate suppliers are required to register with the department. A list of registered suppliers will be published on the department's website for ease of reference.
