Pretoria - It's official: World Cup champions Spain will return to South Africa to face Africa XI in a match aimed at thanking those who were responsible for the successful hosting of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
Sport and Recreation Ministry spokesperson, Paena Galane, said the date and venue have not yet been finalised, but the game will be played in June in South Africa.
"This thank you match was supposed to be played in April or May, but as a result of the upcoming local government elections, a consensus was reached to get a new date," he said.
Galane said Africa XI will be made up of great African players such as Ivory Coast and Chelsea star Didier Drogba, Inter Milan and Cameroon striker, Samuel Eto'o as well as South Africa and Tottenham Hotspur sensational midfielder, Steven Pienaar.
"The view of the Ministry of Sport and Recreation is that the 2010 FIFA World Cup was a reflective of Africa and this is South Africa's way of thanking everyone who was involved in the successful hosting of the 2010 World Cup," he said.
However, Galane could not say who will be coaching Africa XI when they take on the Spaniards.
South African Football Association (Safa) President Kirsten Nematandani, who is currently out of the country, said: "I can't comment before my scheduled meeting with the Minister of Sport and Recreation."
