Pretoria - Despite a recommendation to increase the remuneration of office bearers by 7 percent, President Jacob Zuma has approved an adjustment of only 5 percent.
The increase is effective from 1 April 2010.
In a statement, the Presidency said Zuma, who is empowered by the Remuneration of Public Office Bearers Act, 1998 (Act No.20 of 1998) (the Act) to determine salaries, allowances and other benefits of the public office bearers, received the recommendation for a 7 percent increase from the Independent Commission for the Remuneration of Public Office Bearers.
"After taking into consideration the recommendations of the commission and other relevant factors prescribed by the Act, the President determined that the total remuneration of all public office bearers should be adjusted by 5 percent with effect from 1 April 2010," said the Presidency.
The President has thanked the commission for its work.
