Pretoria - More than 97 000 learners who were unsuccessful during last year's matric exams will today sit for the supplementary examinations.
Learners started the exams with German, Portuguese, Hebrew and Electrical Technology. The last papers, Engineering Graphics and Design will be written on 25 March 2010.
Learners, who qualified to write the supplementary exams included those who failed two subjects, missed the November 2009 examinations or specific subjects due to illness.
Learners who could produce medical certificates as well as learners who wanted to improve their results in specific subjects to gain university entrance were also allowed to write the exam.
Basic Education spokesperson, Dr Granville Whittle, said all provinces were ready to administer the supplementary examinations.
"The Department of Basic Education has taken over the administration of the supplementary examinations in the Mpumalanga Province where around 8 000 matriculants will sit for the examinations," Dr Whittle said.
The department wished all candidates well and also encouraged them to take advantage of the support initiatives offered by the various provinces.
The Study Mate support materials, as well as previous examination papers including memoranda, are available on the departmental website (www.education.gov.za), Dr Whittle said.
The results for the supplementary exams will be released at the examination centres on 30 April 2010.
