Pretoria - The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality has welcomed the investigation by the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) into some of its affairs, saying it would cooperate fully.
"We have full confidence in the team that is dealing with the investigation and will respect the outcome thereof. The metro commits itself to fully co-operate with the investigation and render any assistance that may be needed by the SIU in the process," spokesperson Zweli Dlamini said.
Executive Mayor Mondli Gungubele also said he remained committed to ensuring that the process was successfully concluded.
The SIU has been instructed by President Jacob Zuma to investigate allegations of mismanagement and maladministration against the Tshwane and Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipalities.
The proclamations signed by Zuma also authorises the unit to investigate concerns related to procurements at both municipalities.
Forensic investigators and accountants, specialists in the fields of cyber-forensics and data analytics and lawyers will be part of the team working on the investigations.
In a statement, the municipality said it had requested the unit to assist with the investigation of some procurement irregularities in October 2009.
