Pretoria - The Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) will reopen on Friday with classes resuming on Monday, following a signed agreement between Health and Allied Workers Union (Nehawu) and the university's management.
The agreement of a 10 percent wage increase across the board was signed on Thursday, following a wage dispute that led to the closure of the institution last week.
The management made the announcement after signing the agreement. "Registration and other activities will resume on Friday, and classes will resume on Monday," the TUT management said.
Earlier this week, Minister of Education Naledi Pandor met with the Nehawu and TUT management to discuss the dispute.
During the meeting, facilitated by the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration, the minister emphasised the need for the parties to resolve their issues in order to restore normality at the university.
The decision to close the university last week was taken in view of the increasingly volatile situation at TUT over the past weeks caused by intimidation of non-striking staff members by some members of the unions as well as acts of violence.
The university has also extended the closing date for registration to ensure that no students are disadvantaged by the strike.
