uMgungundlovu - Over 12 000 orphans in KwaZulu-Natal will go to school this winter sporting warm school uniforms.
"No child or learner should go to school without a uniform because he or she is an orphan or because unemployed parents can't afford to buy them uniforms," said provincial Social Development MEC Meshack Radebe in Ezimweni on Sunday.
The department is currently identifying orphans living in uMgungundlovu who cannot afford to buy their own uniforms and school materials.
They will receive two sets of uniforms, including school schools, which are an important necessity during the cold winter months.
Meanwhile, the department will also distribute food parcels to at least four thousand people in the area, including more than two thousand people who have been identified to receive food urgently.
Mr Radebe also pointed out that department officials were identifying poor families who needed to be given food parcels over a period of three months while they waited for government to process their social grant applications.
The MEC, who was accompanied by the MEC for Finance and Economic Development in the province, Dr Zweli Mkhize, on Sunday also handed over food parcels to women who had lost their husbands or bread winners and were struggling to feed their families.
