Speaking at Madiba's birthday celebration at the Dinokana Sports ground in Zeerust, Mashatile said it was imperative for all South Africans to celebrate the day as to recognise the former President's commitment to a non-sexiest and a democratic South Africa.
Hundreds of people throughout the North West province came in large numbers to celebrate Madiba's birthday at the sports ground.
In honour of Madiba, people have been urged to spend 67 minutes of their time helping others especially the poor.
Mashatile emphasised the need for all South Africans to ensure harmony in society and respect each other. "We must continue to work hard to ensure a better life for all," he said.
Activities for this year's Mandela birthday celebrations included unveiling of tomb stones of former freedom fighters, cleaning of graves, beautification of schools and old age homes, flying the South African flag in schools and handing out of blankets.
The celebration at the Dinokana sports ground included performances by local musicians and traditional groups.
As part of the celebration some of the local schools were cleaned while some were painted by North West senior government officials.
Mashatile also called on South Africans to join hands in grabbling with the challenges of poverty.
"We must together join hands in expanding job opportunities for the unemployed youth. Let us all strive to become agents of a caring society," he said.
Mashatile said Nelson Mandela Day celebrations were also an opportunity to promote social cohesion, national healing and nation building.
Various political party representatives sent well wishes to Madiba on his birthday. UDM leader, Bantu Holomisa described Madiba as a man who did not allow fear to stand in his way.
"Madiba was a skillful negotiator and he intervened in the most volatile situations," he said. Holomisa called on South Africans to treat Mandela Day as a special day.
As part of the celebrations, Mashatile urged all government departments and municipalities, the private sector and local communities to initiate activities aimed at achieving the objectives of Nelson Mandela Day throughout the country.
Also in attendance were North West MECs, Mayors, councillors and the traditional leaders.
