Pretoria - Government has welcomed the 40-year prison sentence that was handed down to Thai national, Chumlong Lemtongthai, for rhino poaching.
The Thai national pleaded guilty to 59 counts in the Kempton Park Magistrate's Court earlier this week.
Phumla Williams, GCIS Acting CEO said: "The ruling shows that South Africa will not compromise on the preservation of our animals. The ruling indicates that crimes against Rhinos and other wildlife will not be tolerated in the country. "
Government also acknowledged the important role played by the courts and law enforcement officials in securing the arrest of Lemtongthai.
Over 500 rhinos have been killed this year, and Government calls on society, wildlife organisations, business and other parties to unite and work together to stop crimes against wildlife. - SAnews.gov.za
