Pietermaritzburg - The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Social Development is to install Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras and electronic biometric access controls at its provincial office in a bid to stamp out fraud and corruption.
In a statement on Tuesday, Social Development MEC Meshack Radebe, said they had decided to improve the IT security measures and access control at the building because a number of employees had recently been suspended for fraud and corrupt activities.
"We are putting these security measures in place to curb fraud and corruption as it costs the department a lot money. We are saying the fraud and corruption must come to an end," said Mr Radebe.
MEC Radebe said for years the department had battled with documents going missing and he hoped the new measures would assist in rooting out corrupt employees.
The department would be investing R2.6 million to install the security measures. The CCTV cameras will first be installed at the head and regional offices and then later, as more funds become available, at local services offices throughout the province.
