Mafikeng - Pinkie Nthibane Mokoto has been appointed Mayor of the Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality.
The 35-year-old has vowed to focus on beefing up service delivery within the district.
"We cannot afford to see our people not being provided with the services while the municipality is mandated to serve the people," said Ms Mokoto.
Speaking to the media shortly after her appointment on Wednesday, she said that she would run the municipality under the principle of "whatever you do, do it to your utmost". During her career she had learnt to work with people from various backgrounds.
Ms Mokoto, a former Member of Parliament, was born and raised in Mafikeng.
Martin Sebakwane, who is the convenor of a task team set up to appoint a new mayor after Themba Ngwabeni was relieved of his duties last month, said he hoped the appointment would bring stability to the municipality.
The Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality was placed under administration by the North West Provincial Government earlier this year. Disgruntled residents set alight parts of the municipal offices in August.
"We call on all stakeholders to unite behind the new mayor and accord her necessary support and cooperation as the leader of the Ngaka Modiri Molema district municipality.
He described Ms Mokoto as humble, approachable and understanding. - BuaNews
