Pretoria – Police and officials from the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries have clamped down on premises in the Mitchell’s Plain area where they seized illegal abalone worth R1.2 million.
Department officials said police received a tip off which led to a house in the Westridge area being searched on Tuesday.
Seven freezers, containing large frozen abalone were found on the premises. Four arrests were made and 4643 units of abalone weighing 1238.4kg was seized.
“A case was registered and the suspects were charged,” a statement said.
In a second incident on the same day, officials arrested two Fujian nationals with 164 undersized West Coast Rock Lobsters in their possession. They were charged at the Bellville Police station. – SAnews.gov.za
