Polokwane - More than 1 400 fines were issued during the Easter holidays in Limpopo while 94 motorists were arrested for violating traffic laws.
Limpopo police spokeswoman Lieutenant Colonel Ronel Otto said different police units, traffic officers and officials from the Liquor Board and South African Revenue Service were involved in the operation.
“Our operation targeted crime hot spots like taverns and shebeens. We managed to close down 25 illegal liquor outlets and 154 legal liquor premise owners were issued with fines for contravention of the licenses and, in worst situations, we discontinued 26 licences,” said Otto.
“A total of 94 people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, while 1 457 fines were issued for contravention of liquor law,” she added.
She said the visibility of law enforcement officers improved people’s behaviour in communities and on the road.
“People behaved and those who failed were arrested," she said.
Otto added that among those arrested were 19 suspects on charges of possession of suspected stolen property and 11 others on charges of illegal possession of firearms.
Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Simon Mpembe thanked community members who helped the police during the operation.
“We managed to execute the duties because some community members helped us and cooperated with us all the way. We congratulate them and the officers who were on duty for making sure that Limpopo was a better place to be during the Easter holidays,” said Mpembe. – SAnews.gov.za
