Pretoria – The Basic Education Department says that the South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (Sadtu) strike has not had a major impact on most parts of the country, as teaching and learning are taking place.
“According to reports from provinces, it seems in most parts of the country it has been a normal school day.
“Early reports indicate that the North West province is the most affected, with 224 teachers reported to be absent; while the gates at seven schools were locked and no schooling taking place.
“In Gauteng, Eastern Cape, Free State, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, Northern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Western Cape, no reports of disruptions had been reported earlier this morning,” said department spokesperson Panyaza Lesufi.
He added that the department’s strike committees in all provinces are monitoring the situation and will send regular reports about any incidents that may arise.
Some of the union's grievances are that Grade R teachers are not being paid enough, Grade 12 examination markers had not received an increase in salaries, and some schools were without the necessary resources to ensure quality education. – SAnews.gov.za
