Pretoria - The Polokwane Regional Court has sentenced a man to life in prison for raping his seven-year-old niece last year.
Elvis Lebang, 36, from Ga-Kibi Royston village in Maleboho, was convicted on one count rape after repeatedly raping his niece in April.
He allegedly took her to a disused house and repeatedly raped her.
Following a frantic search, the victim who was hurt, was discovered by members of the community screaming and bleeding inside the deserted house.
She identified her uncle as the perpetrator and he was later arrested the same day.
Limpopo Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Simon Mpembe said this was a horrific act of violence, cruelty and inhumanity committed against a child.
"I am deeply gratified by the court’s outcome and hope it will help the victim and her loved ones to achieve a sense of closure.
“We want to assure our communities that as the police, we will stop at nothing to rid our society of rapists who kill our women and children emotionally,” said Mpembe. - SAnews.gov.za
