Pretoria - Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane has condemned the senseless murder of children in the province.
This is after police discovered the bodies of two little girls in two different areas around the province this week.
“What kind of people are we who devour our young so ruthlessly? What kind of a society are we who allow such acts of barbarity to occur in our midst?” Mokonyane asked.
“It is time we, the government, and communities, made this province a no-go area for child murderers and abusers. Someone in our communities knows the perpetrators of these despicable acts.
“We urge anyone who can assist to bring those who committed these acts [to book] to call the police,” she said.
Mokonyane has expressed the province’s condolences to the families of the young girls, saying government was deeply concerned about the levels of child abuse and murders that have taken place in and around Gauteng in recent weeks.
The Gauteng Department of Community Safety will continue to educate members of the public and create awareness programmes on crime prevention, especially on women and child abuse.
Mokonyane called on those who witness child abuse to report it to the nearest law enforcement agency.
“Just as the saying goes, ‘it takes a community to raise a child’ - it also takes a community to protect a child,” she said. – SAnews.gov.za
