Pretoria - The national and Gauteng Departments of Health are on a mission to ensure that Hillbrow residents are safe during New Year's Eve celebrations.
Hillbrow residents have become known for celebrations characterised by objects being thrown from flats and the firing of guns.
In some instances, heavy objects such as fridges have been thrown off high-rise buildings.
The Department of Health, together with the provincial Department and civil organisations, have embarked on a campaign to curb such celebrations which could result in injuries.
The Hillbrow Prevention of Trauma and Injuries Campaign is expected to kick off on 29 December.
This initiative is part of the National Department's Prevention of Trauma and Injuries campaign for the festive season.
The campaign started on 18 December at Moloto Road where Deputy Health Minister, Dr Gwendoline Ramokgopa, donated first aid kits to community members.
Residents were also given basic training on how to handle injuries as a result of road accidents.
