Pretoria - Counting in the national and provincial elections has passed the halfway mark on the first day of counting.
Shortly before 11am, 50.22% of the votes cast in the 2014 national and provincial elections had been counted.
Provincially, in the Eastern Cape, 2 729 of the 4 615 voting districts in the province had been counted. The province, which spotted several “hotspots” in the lead up to the elections, had seen 17 278 spoilt votes just before 11am. This as 60.54% of counting of the votes has been counted.
In the Free State, 604 of the 1 523 voting districts had been counted, while in Gauteng 460 of 2 647 voting districts had been counted. Just before 11am 17.38% of the votes cast in the province had been counted.
In KwaZulu-Natal, 41.99% of the votes cast in the province had been counted. A total 1 993 of the 4 746 voting districts had been counted.
The Limpopo province had completed 33.24% counting of the votes cast in the province. Of the province’s 3 066 voting districts, 1 019 had been counted.
In Mpumalanga, 68.77% of the votes cast in the province had been counted.
In North West, 43.59% of the votes cast in the province had been counted. Of the province’s 1 716 voting districts, 748 had been counted.
In the Northern Cape, a total 88.9% of the votes cast in the province had been counted.
Of the Western Cape’s 1 578 voting districts, votes at 1 223 voting districts had been counted just before 11am.
Results at the Independent Electoral Commission’s (IEC) National Operations Centre continue to come in.
