Pretoria - Newly inaugurated President Jacob Zuma says South Africa will continue to play its role in building a better Africa and world.
He said the new administration will continue to champion African growth, development and prosperity through supporting regional integration, intra-Africa trade and the development of infrastructure.
“Our vision is that of a South Africa that is a key promoter and contributor to sustainable development, democracy, the rule of law, human rights and peace within the continent,” Zuma said during his inauguration speech after taking his Oath of Office, which was administered by Constitutional Court Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng.
He said South Africa’s participation in various multilateral institutions, such as the United Nations, G20 and special forums such as BRICS, will continue as they are aimed at “promoting a fairer and more just world”.
The inauguration, which was attended by former President Thabo Mbeki, former Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe and several serving and former Heads of State and Government, signalled the start of the second term of office for President Zuma, whose party won the 2014 General Elections.
Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, dressed in a dark suit and blue tie, arrived to loud applause and whistling at the Union Buildings, while guests also cheered for former Zambian President Kenneth Kaunda and Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan.
President Zuma arrived 11.20am, to cheers at the Union Buildings, ahead of his inauguration.
He arrived in a convoy of motorcycles and official vehicles with blue lights. He greeted military officials and walked down the red carpet with one of his four wives. He was escorted by military generals in front and behind him.
Guests in the amphitheatre stood up and clapped as he walked by.
Before his arrival, the military band marched and stood to attention near the Amphitheatre, where dignitaries were seated. - SAnews.gov.za
