Pretoria - Ekurhuleni is to host the third annual Masakhane Community Games at the Germiston Stadium, on Saturday.
According to the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality’s spokesperson Mandlakazi Mpahlwa-Sigcawu, the games are a community-based programme focused on building social cohesion and increasing interest in sports.
It also forms part of activities around Youth Month.
"The programme also seeks to promote healthy living, curb obesity, and reduce the high rate of pregnancy and drug abuse amongst young people in Ekurhuleni,” he said.
Anyone in Ekurhuleni who is interested in participating and who is 15-years and older may join a team in their customer care area.
The games will include sporting codes such as aerobics, soccer, five-a-side soccer, basketball, cricket, netball, volleyball, tennis, table tennis, karate, boxing and chess.
Mpahlwa-Sigcawu said there will also be a 4km fun walk and 8km run.
Outstanding participants will be selected to be part of the Ekurhuleni Sports Academy which comprises of talented athletes who are trained and equipped to represent the municipality in competitive sport tournaments.
Athletes from the academy later advance to provincial and national sports teams. - SAnews.gov.za
