Pretoria - Hennie Otto won the four-day SA golf Open Championship trophy after beating 156 amateur and world-acclaimed golfers at the Serengeti Golf and Wild Life Estate in Kempton Park.
Other world-acclaimed golfers who participated in the SA Open Championship, which started last Thursday, are defending champion Ernie Els, Retief Goosen, Austrian Bernd Wiesberger and Richard McEvoy from England.
Otto's win is the second on the European Tour after he won the 2008 Italian Open.
Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality has played host to a number of top amateur events, including the prestigious South African Amateur Championship. However, the SA Open marked the first time the city hosted a professional tournament co-sanctioned by both the Sunshine Tour and European Tour.
The city's executive mayor, Mondli Gungubele, has congratulated Otto.
"Congratulations are in order to Hennie Otto. Indeed as the City of Ekurhuleni we are [very] proud. We not only hosted a successful 101 installment of the oldest national golf tournament after the British Open, our own Boksburg resident has ensured that this championship remains home."
Gungubele further extended a word of congratulations to Brandon Stone for winning the amateur category.
The mayor said the city hoped Otto's win would inspire more youngsters in the region to develop an interest in golf as Ekurhuleni has a reputation for producing top sportsmen and women in the country.
The last time the SA Open Championship was held in Gauteng was in 2000. The City of Ekurhuleni will host it again next year.
