Pretoria - Public Works Minister Thulas Nxesi is leaving no stone unturned in his bid to root out corruption, maladministration and fraud in his department.

This, as part of efforts to turn the department around.

In the latest move in this regard, the department has fired former departmental Director: Prestige Unit, Noloyiso Ntwana, for fraudulently paying more than R60 million to renovate houses for the new administration in 2009.

Media Liaison Officer, Thami Mchunu, said: “We are on track to turn around the department. The minister is on record that he will uproot corruption, maladministration and corruption in the department and I can tell you that there are still more officials who are in the firing line.”

The establishment of the Governance Risk and Compliance (RGC) unit to drive the compliance, anti-fraud and corruption campaign has been hailed as a milestone for the department.

Delivering his Budget Vote Speech in Parliament last month, Minister Nxesi said the GRC branch will also oversee strategic planning, risk and performance management and process re-engineering.

“The branch is tackling a backlog of 250 internal cases reported since 2009/10. Of the 158 completed investigations, 93 disciplinary charges have been recommended and 15 criminal cases reported to the South African Police Service,” he said.

Minister Nxesi said the objective is to develop a new service delivery model in line with the Department of Public Service and Administration requirements. - SAnews.gov.za
