President arrives

Thursday, February 12, 2015

Pretoria – President Jacob Zuma, accompanied on this special occasion by Thobeka Zuma, has arrived on the steps of the National Assembly in Parliament, where the State of the Nation Address will get underway shortly.

He looked debonair in his navy suit and burgundy tie, while Thobeka Zuma was flawless in a chic black dress with embroidered detail and red shoes. Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa arrived just ahead of the President.

The President is expected to outline government’s programme of action for the year as well as give an update of the plans announced last year.

The event is a full ceremonial occasion. Before the President went inside the National Assembly Chamber, there was a national salute by the Ceremonial Guard of the SANDF and a 21-gun salute.

Junior and civil guards of honour lined the route from the Slave Lodge to the National Assembly building, along with eminent persons who were selected by provincial legislatures, in recognition of their contribution to the country’s democracy.

Earlier this week, Parliament’s Presiding Officers announced that for the first time a female praise singer will lead President Zuma into the National Assembly delivering a praise song in Sepedi.

The SONA is being attended by Members of Parliament, special guests, luminaries and international guests.

The red carpet this evening was characterised by traditional outfits with a touch of colonial history, soft silky dresses and old-fashioned tailored suits.

VIP guests, including Ministers, MPs, celebrities and eminent persons, brought the red carpet to life with stunning outfits and their charisma.

There are live screenings of the event, as well as a live broadcast, by various television channels. – SAnews.gov.za
