President Zuma saddened by death of Alf Kumalo

Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma has conveyed his deepest condolences to the family and friends of renowned photographer Alfred Kumalo, who passed away at the weekend.

In a statement, Zuma described the recipient of the National Order of the Ikhamanga as a great South African.

"We have lost an outstanding individual and a great South African. He was a meticulous photographer and his work will live on forever as a monument to the people's resilience and fortitude in the face of colonial oppression and apartheid," said Zuma.

He said once imprisoned for his craft, Kumalo's outstanding photography traces the history of South Africa in all its glory, trials and tribulations and has earned him several awards of recognition including the prestigious Nat Nakasa Award.

"On behalf of government and the whole nation, I wish to convey our deepest condolences to the Kumalo family and friends. May his soul rest in peace," said the President. - SAnews.gov.z
