Senior official fired for gross misconduct

Wednesday, March 11, 2015

Pretoria - The Gauteng Health Department on Wednesday said it has dismissed the Risk Management and Internal Controls Chief Director, Abbey Marokoane, after finding him guilty of gross misconduct.

The department’s spokesperson, Prince Hamnca, said the department views Marokoane’s transgressions in a serious light.

“Lack of integrity feeds corruption and tarnishes the image of the department. Public healthcare is the only hope for the majority of people who cannot afford private healthcare,” said Hamnca.

Marokoane, who was arrested on charges of serious misconduct, appeared in the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court in Pretoria on 28 November 2014. He was granted bail and later suspended from duty on 9 December last year following allegations of corruption concerning hospital security contracts.

“A disciplinary hearing was finalised at the end of January 2015 which found him guilty of gross misconduct.

“The department views this as the closing of the chapter in this matter and hopes it sends a message to all healthcare workers to remain honest and accountable for their actions,” said Hamnca. - SAnews.gov.za
