Mbombela - Officials from the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) will from Friday be touring Mpumalanga to explain the Madiba banknotes series to the public.
The new R10, R20, R50, R100 and R200 banknotes will all bear former President Nelson Mandela's face and will come into circulation before the end of the year.
"We want to reach every South African through this communication campaign. The SARB roadshow will be in the Mpumalanga province to familiarise communities with the new banknotes prior to circulation," said SARB spokesperson Hlengani Mathebula.
Mathebula said awareness campaigns will be held at retail malls, transport hubs and pension pay points in urban and rural areas across the country.
In Mpumalanga, the campaign will be held in the Mbombela city centre from Friday until October 29 before moving to the taxi rank on October 30.
It will then proceed to the pension pay-point in Emalahleni on November 1 and end at the Highveld Mall's Ridge Casino on November 2.
"It is our responsibility as the Reserve Bank to protect the credibility of the South African currency. This can only be done by making sure that the public know their money and its distinct features really well," said Mathebula.
The new banknotes were launched in early September by Reserve Bank Governor Gill Marcus.
The campaign is also using radio, television, billboards, banners, the SARB website, and both print and online media, including social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook and mobile device sites. - SAnews.gov.za
