Pretoria - The Department of Labour has warned employers and members of the public of a conman masquerading as a labour inspector.
The man conducts impromptu inspections and requests money to be transferred into his account.
The warning follows a complaint this week by an employer in Howick in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, who said the man showed up at her workplace to conduct a spot inspection and check on employees. The man claimed things were not in order and requested an amount of money to be deposited into an account.
The complainant became suspicious and contacted the department, which confirmed the man does not work for the department.
“All employers, stakeholders and members of the public are strongly warned of this scam and urged to contact their nearest labour centre to verify any inspectors' credentials. Labour inspectors always carry their identity cards, which bear their details and photo and the card produced prior to the inspection,” the department said in a statement.
The department said it is working in conjunction with the police and will leave no stone unturned to ensure that this fraudster is brought to justice and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. – SAnews.gov.za
