Cape Town - Hundreds of people from across the country and beyond its borders are pouring in to the city today to pay tribute to the late former Minister of Education and Water Affairs, Professor Kader Asmal.
By mid-morning, dozens were already arriving at the Cape Town City Hall, where the official memorial service for the late veteran is set to start at 11am.
Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe is to give the keynote address at 12.40pm at a ceremony set to be attended by government officials, politicians, foreign dignitaries, family and friends, among others.
Minister in the Presidency Trevor Manuel is scheduled to be the master of ceremonies.
During the proceedings, a video clip titled "The Life of the late Pro. Kader Asmal" is expected to be viewed, while Louise Asmal and grandchildren Zoe and Oisin are to be among those to give their tributes.
The Irish government will give its message of support through its ambassador, His Excellency Brendan McMahon, with Pieter Dirk Uys and Dr Sam Ramsay expected to do the same.
Professor Antjie Krog is expected to recite a tribute poem, while the "Working for Water Choir" will provide a music item.
Meanwhile, city authorities have indicated that streets near the City Hall will be closed between 6am and 3pm to allow for a dignified memorial for Asmal. Pedestrians around the area will not be affected and the municipal courts in the building will function normally.
