Pretoria - The N3 highway between Van Reenens Pass and Villiers in the Free State remains closed due to heavy snowfalls in the area.

Motorists have been advised to postpone their trips from Gauteng to Durban until the snow has melted in the Van Reenen area.

For the past two days, motorists have been stuck in that stretch of the road. According to traffic authorities in the area, it is expected that the road will be cleared by later this afternoon.

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) is currently assisting motorists along the N3 highway between Villiers and Harrismith in Free State province following heavy snowfalls in the area.

Five South African Infantry Battalion (5SAI) from Ladysmith have been deployed to Van Reenens Pass to provide support to vehicles stuck due to heavy snow.

Heavy duty trucks have blocked the road and SANDF members are assisting to clear the route to allow for the free flow of traffic.

Heavy duty military vehicles from 2 Field Engineer Regiment are also in the area to assist in removing trucks which are currently obstructing traffic flow.

According to South African Weather Service (SAWS) forecaster, Ezekiel Sebego, no more snow is expected throughout the country.

Sebego told BuaNews that some parts of the country will start experiencing warmer temperatures from tomorrow.

"However, cold temperatures will still persist in provinces such as Free State, Mpumalanga, Gauteng, North West and the Eastern Cape," he said.
