Pretoria - Public Service and Administration Minister Richard Baloyi says it is imperative for public servants to adhere to the principles of Batho Pele (people first) for effective service delivery.
"Public servants are foot soldiers for service delivery... Our campaign, 'My Public Service, My Future' continues the tradition of the Freedom Charter, the Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP) and the renewed sense of commitment to the people," said Baloyi at a consultative forum held with academics on the campaign.
Baloyi cautioned that if service delivery targets were not meet, officials should inform the public on the reasons behind failure to deliver.
He said public servants must commit to ensuring a better life for all through the principles of Batho Pele, adding that people should measure government against what they have committed to deliver. He also emphasised the need for public servants to be professional.
Baloyi said the consultative meeting is about fostering cooperation with the academic world and building solidarity in the context of a social partnership and co-ownership of the future.
He explained that the objectives of the My Public Service, My Future campaign include accelerating employer-employee contact and information sharing, and providing opportunities for reflections on expectations and rights of citizens against the services that public servants are delivering.
