Pretoria - In a bid to ensure that more unemployed people get an opportunity to enter the job market, the Gauteng Department of Labour, through its Public Employment Services Unit, has joined hands with the Gauteng Department of Health to recruit candidates for nursing opportunities.
The application deadline is 29 April 2011, after which candidates that qualify, according to academic requirements, will be assessed. The final potential candidates will then be referred to the Gauteng Department of Health for interviews, which is the final selection phase.
According to the provincial Labour Department spokesperson, Mishack Magakwe, the partnership between the two departments will see more than 800 unemployed persons enrolled in a four-year nursing diploma course that entails theoretical and practical training in different hospitals in Gauteng.
Registered unemployed people are screened against set criteria given by Gauteng Department of Health and assessed by Department of Labour career counsellors to determine their potential.
The process kick started on 20 January 2010, with the initial meeting between the two government departments. Approval from the Department of Health to recruit the learners was received in April 2010.
Due to the success of the project, the Department of Labour was requested to recruit again for 2012's intake.
Last year's recruitment saw 742 candidates being appointed for the four-year nursing diploma, which commenced in January 2011.
They are receiving a salary while on training. This is an endeavor to assist the registered unemployed persons on the Department of Labour database to access placement opportunities.
The process of registering unemployed persons, recruitment and assessments as well as registering vacancies is offered at 26 labour centres of the Department of Labour in the Gauteng area.
