SA commemorates Africa Day

Friday, May 25, 2018

South Africans across the country today join the continent in observing Africa Day.

Africa Day is celebrated annually on 25 May within the African continent to mark the formation of the Organisation of African Unity on 25 May 1963 and the African Union in 2002, which was created to promote unity in Africa.

South Africa is celebrating Africa Day under the theme ‘A year of Nelson Mandela - Building a Better Africa and a Better World’, which aims to inspire Africans to join hands to ensure a better, united and socially unified continent.

The day will see President Cyril Ramaphosa hosting the Diplomatic Corps in Pretoria.

Africa Day presents an opportunity to promote African unity, ensure deeper regional integration and recommit Africa to a common destiny.

It also celebrates African solidarity through unity in diversity and creativity. Africa Day is also an opportunity to confront the challenges the continent faces, and evaluate the successes and cultural and economic potential of the continent. - SAnews.gov.za
