Pretoria - The Transport Department will announce the steering committee of the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project (GFIP) Tolling System which recently caused a public uproar.
The announcement of the steering committee will be made in Cape Town during a media briefing also aimed at informing and updating reporters on the developments regarding the GFIP tolling system.
During the briefing members of the Steering Committee will be announced, their duties and responsibilities and including the timelines they will be working on.
The toll tariffs gazetted for the 185-km Gauteng highway network have been put on ice until further notice, following a meeting between Transport Minister, Sibusiso Ndebele and Gauteng Premier, Nomvula Mokonyane.
The two agreed to put it on hold with the view of allowing an inclusive consultation process with the objective of settling broader questions relating to delivery and funding of transport infrastructure in South Africa.
Before the tolling system was suspended, there was unhappiness by motorists, the ruling African National Congress in the province, its ally the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu), Business Unity South Africa (Busa) and opposition political parties.
The new toll-road fees were scheduled to be effective later in June. - BuaNews
