Pretoria - Transport Minister Ben Martins has conveyed his condolences to the family of Free State Health MEC, Fezi Ngubentombi, who died in a car crash in Qwaqwa at the weekend.

Ngubentombi was making her way back from a World Aids Day event when the car crash happened.

The MEC's passing takes place just as the provincial Department of Police, Roads and Transport is preparing to launch its Festive Season Road Safety campaign, in line with the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020.

"On behalf of the transport family, we wish to convey our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the late MEC Fezi Ngubentombi, who passed away on Saturday in the Free State.

"MEC Ngubentombi's untimely passing occurs at a time when the department is intensifying its road safety campaign ahead of the festive season. May her soul rest in peace

"Our condolences also go to the Motaung family, who lost a loved one in the same accident. We wish the late MEC's 14-year-old daughter, together with her protector, who survived the gruesome car crash a speedy recovery," said Martins.

In the continued effort to spread and encourage the message of road safety across South Africa, Martins commemorated the World Remembrance Day for victims of road crashes and launched the 2012 Festive Season Road Safety campaign in Mpumalanga less than two weeks ago.

The department has called on all South Africans to support and become part of the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020, as declared by the United Nations.

"We urge all road users, motorists and pedestrians alike to exercise great caution and obey all the rules of the road at all times," Martins said.

"We must all support and participate in the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020," he said. - SAnews.gov.za
