Giyani - A clerk accused of dumping 700 textbooks meant for Limpopo pupils has been released on R2 000 bail.

Glen Kubayi, 44, a clerk at the Giyani regional office of the Department of Education, was not asked to plead to a malicious damage to property charge when he appeared in the Giyani Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

He was arrested on Monday after 700 textbooks meant to be delivered to some of the province's schools were found dumped at a river in Giyani on June 29.

"The suspect was granted R2 000 bail, which he paid, and the case was postponed to August 3 for further police investigation," provincial police spokesman Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said.

Mulaudzi said Kubayi's arrest came after the department in the Limpopo province laid charges of malicious damage to property.

"Soon after the books were found by community members next to a river in the Giyani area, the Department of Education laid the charges which led to the suspect's arrest," said Mulaudzi.

He said the textbooks included Mathematics for Grade 8 and Numeracy in Sepedi for Grade 3.

Mulaudzi said while police investigate the case, more arrests are expected.
