Charges against Crime Intelligence boss provisionally withdrawn

Pretoria - Charges against suspended Crime Intelligence Unit head Lieutenant-General Richard Mdluli have been provisionally withdrawn.

Mdluli was arrested last year in connection with the 1999 murder of Oupa Abel Ramogibe.

He was facing charges of murder, attempted murder, kidnapping, intimidation, corruption and defeating the ends of justice.

"...upon receipt of representations from lawyers of General Mdluli, wherein they raised certain issues relating to [the] case, DPP South Gauteng Adv Andrew Chauke felt that these issues can best be dealt with through a formal inquest before a magistrate and not a trial," said National Prosecuting Authority spokesman Mthunzi Mhaga.

The appropriate decision at this stage was to provisionally withdraw the charges until the outcome of the inquest proceedings, he added.

"Unfortunately representations made by [the] accused are without prejudice, which means we maintain confidentiality at all costs hence we are not at liberty to disclose contents of their representations," Mhaga said.
