Mpuma residents warned of severe thunderstorms

Pretoria - Mpumalanga residents in the Highveld, which includes areas like Witbank, Groblersdal, Ermelo, Standerton, Belfast, Secunda, Middleburg, are being warned of possible severe thunderstorms.

The Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs in the province issued the warning.

The department has also instructed all municipalities to be on full alert and be on standby.

"The department would also like to warn communities of possible flash floods and urges members of the public to be extremely cautious at all times," said departmental spokesperson Simphiwe Kunene.

"In the event of flooding, communities must inform their local municipal disaster management offices," Kunene said.

Very cold weather is also predicted for the southern and south western parts of the province.

The department urged residents to be extremely careful when lighting up fires, heaters and other warming appliances, that they should not leave them unattended and that they are put off when not in use.

Parents are being advised to make sure that children are not left alone with fires and heating appliances.

The South African Weather Services had predicted that most parts of the country will experience rainy conditions till Friday.

Motorists are also advised to be careful as the roads are wet.
