Pretoria - Two Home Affairs officials suspected of being part of a syndicate that sold illegal passports to foreigners were granted bail in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.
Samson Mogashoa, 65, and Maria Moyo, 44, were reportedly granted bail of R2 000 each. Hazel Shazaad, 34, and Rebecca Mnisi - two other members of the alleged syndicate who are not Home Affairs employees, will remain in custody.
The four accused are facing charges of corruption, fraud and contravening the Immigration Act and are expected back in court on 17 January.
It is believed that the syndicate provided illegal Pakistani immigrants with South African passports for a fee, making it easy for them to move in and out of the country.
Mnisi's son, who was arrested for allegedly burning documents that were considered potential exhibits in the case, will appear in court on Thursday on a defeating the ends of justice charge.
